Lantern Festival – A Cultural Beauty Not to Be Missed in Hoi An

Hoi An Lantern Festival – Unique Cultural Feature in the Heart of the Ancient Town

Hoi An Lantern Festival is a traditional cultural event held periodically, turning the ancient town into a unique space of light art. On festival nights, the entire public electricity system in the ancient town is turned off, replaced by the soft light from thousands of lanterns of various shapes, sizes and colors, creating a real-life fairy tale scene.

Origin and Deep Meaning

The art of lanterns was introduced to Hoi An in the 16th-17th centuries, when this trading port was a bustling trading point between Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and Western cultures. Initially, lanterns were just lighting devices, but gradually became a typical cultural symbol of Hoi An.
In traditional concepts, lanterns have a deep spiritual meaning – the light from lanterns symbolizes intelligence, wisdom and luck. Lighting lanterns is considered a way to ward off evil spirits, bringing peace and prosperity to families and communities. In particular, the ritual of releasing flower lanterns on the Hoai River also has the meaning of sending wishes, remembering ancestors and praying for a good future.

Hoi An Lantern Festival Schedule

Hoi An Lantern Festival is held regularly on the following days:

  • 14th day of the lunar month: This is the official time of the festival, when the old town completely turns off the electric lights from 18:00 to 22:00, using only light from lanterns and candles.
  • Full moon night (15th lunar month): Continuing the atmosphere of the 14th, the full moon night often has additional spiritual activities at pagodas, temples, and shrines in the area.
  • Lunar New Year: The festival lasts from 3-7 days on a grand scale, with many unique cultural activities.
  • Mid-Autumn Festival: A special festival for children with activities such as lantern processions, lion dances, and art performances.
  • National holidays: Such as April 30-May 1, National Day September 2, festivals are held on a large scale, attracting a large number of tourists.

Ideal Time to Attend

Although the lantern festival takes place regularly every month, the periods from February to April and September to November are considered the most ideal for visiting. The weather during these months is cool, with little rain, creating favorable conditions for sightseeing, experiencing and taking photos.
In particular, the lantern festival during the Mid-Autumn Festival often has many rich activities for children, while the festival at the end of the year (December) brings the bustling festive atmosphere of Christmas and New Year.
